And the artists moved in…
The Valley’s iconic music scene has fostered many of Australia’s leading bands over the years. Internationally known acts such as The Bee Gees, The Go Betweens, the Grates, and Custard started and took off in Fortitude Valley. Rents were much cheaper than the city, so places like the old Target building on the Brunswick Street Mall became a rehearsal space for bands, and became the place where Powderfinger and Regurgitator perfected their sound. The 1990’s saw the resurgence of music venues in the Valley area and it has continued to grow since, creating a dynamic and supportive music scene.
The Fortitude Valley has also been known for its art and cutting-edge culture, nurturing young designers and artist such as Maiocchi and supporting cultural facilities like the Judith Wright Centre and Visible Ink. And long before this, in the 1900’s, The Valley was known for its collection of fabric drapery shops, starting its long tradition with clothing, fashion, and design.
